Now I’m depressed! Not really, but I am called to re-examine my priorities when it’s taken into account that Emily Hagins, the writer/director of the above horror comedy, is only 17 years old. Not only that - this girl emerged onto the scene when she was 12 and became a starlet of the film festival circuit at 14 when the 2009 documentary Zombie Girl chronicled her rise to fame.

Is My Sucky Teen Romance a film I’m chomping at the bit to see? Not quite. Still, the girl undoubtedly has cinematic chops and a knack for witty dialogue, so I’m anxious to see where she ends up in her career.

I’ve seen a deal of film trailers on “The Tube” that have been re-cut so as to falsely and humorously market the film as a different genre, but this is by far the best I’ve come across. Peep The Shining as a family film for a close second.

I caught this little gem at this year’s Dallas International Film Festival and, let me tell ya, it’s a friggin’ crowd-pleaser. Whether a fan of comedy or horror, EVERYONE should see this film. It completely turns the genre on its head, portraying the “creepy townsfolk” as the pure, sweet-natured heroes and the “innocent college kids” as the real evil-doers. All in all, judge not and you won’t get impaled on a tree.
