Before you judge too quickly, I gotta say it’s actually pretty darned good for a generic rom-com, one with the perfect amount of crudeness in one corner and heart in the other. Sure, the premise is nothing new and you’re able to call the shots every step of the way, but JT and Kunis’ chemistry is uncanny and director Will Gluck brings his signature elevating-the-obvious style to every scene (after all, he IS the guy who brought us Easy A and the under-appreciated Fired Up).
Even through the chick fodder of lovey-dovey montages, zany set pieces and dance numbers, there’s a huge “guy” factor abound, one ripe with stingingly witty one-liners and tell-it-like-it-is dialogue. As for heart, the been-there-done-that serious moments during the third act ring true in the throat-choking department, due to both leads having genuine dramatic chops. Richard Jenkins even pops in a bit to bring the house down in an Oscar-worthy , ”If you love her, go get her” scene that, truthfully, belongs in another movie.
If you’ve got an hour and forty-nine minutes to kill, go have yourself a laugh.
