I want to stay on a “wait and see” basis as much as possible so as not to get too excited, but, from where I sit and view right now, there’s a whole lot of “Woohoo!” going on in this trailer.

While I wouldn’t necessarily call it a horror film - or even a thriller, really - as the marketing material makes it seem, Shutter Island is definitely a tightly-wound, good old-fashioned mystery, masterfully crafted in only a way “Marty” can do. All in all, it’s still a 2-hour Twilight Zone episode, complete with saw-it-coming-from-a-mile-away twist ending, but it’s still an engaging ride, rife with impressive performances (Jackie Earle Haley and Patricia Clarkson dominate with what little screen time they are given) and beautiful cinematography. Thelma Schoonmaker, a Scorsese alum, deserves a shout-out as well for her stylish, yet seamless editing chops.
If you’re anything like me, the last ten minutes will grip you to your seat, not because of the twist ending, but because of the man himself: Leo DiCap’s. Why oh fucking why this man hasn’t won an Oscar yet is beyond me.
