Not for the faint of heart, here’s the teaser for Among Friends, the directorial debut of actress and all-around cool chick Danielle Harris. The synopsis: “A dinner party set against an 80’s backdrop goes wrong when one in a group of friends hijacks the evening in an attempt to help the others come clean about their secret betrayals to one another, and is willing to cut through the bone in order to expose the truth.”

Scripted by Alyssa Lobit, this fun, twisted concept sounds great to me and I’m anxious to see what Danielle can do behind the camera. Plus, if you couldn’t tell by my last two horror movie posts, I’ve got kind of a fanboy boner for AJ Bowen, who co-stars in this. Consider me all-around excited.

The House of the Devil is another amazing horror film I caught this weekend and it’s easily the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. No… Seriously! Never before have I seen suspense and dread executed with such expertise. Writer/Director/Editor Ti West has crafted the perfect love-letter to the great spookfests of the early 80’s. Not to mention, he deals with atmosphere in a way that would make Polanski and Friedkin shake in their boots. Don’t believe me? Lock the doors and kill the lights and see for yourself.

A Horrible Way to Die is a peculiar horror film, a rarity that focuses on story and character and saves the gory stuff for later. It’s a film that plunges into the human soul, examining how far someone will go to face their fears, regardless of which side of the blade they’re on. It’s moody without being tense; vicious without being threatening. It’s cold and unapologetic, yet a beautiful entity to behold. It may not frighten you right away, but you’ll feel its prickly claws in you long after it’s over.
